![]() How
To Promote Your Book Using The Internet
WHY THE INTERNET? By using the Internet, you can alert thousands of readers
about your book. In fact, most of them may never hear about it in any
other way. Therefore, you will open up a whole new market for your work.
Go for it! BUILD A WEB SITE There are many web page products available today. The software
I chose to work with is Web Studio by Sierra On-Line, Inc. It is
available in most software outlets. The reason I decided to go with Web
Studio is due to its "drop and drag" feature. You just use
your cursor to pull down whatever you need to build and maintain your
web pages. It’s simple. If I could do it, you can too! Also, you can
contact Sierra for assistance if you get stuck. I have only had to do
this a couple of times. I am very satisfied with their product and
service. FIND A HOST How do you get your site on the Internet once you have
composed your web pages? You need to find a host. In other words, you
will transfer (upload) your pages to the host site. Web Studio makes
this step very easy. Then, your host will place your pages on the net.
Many host sites charge for their service, but free hosting is available
as well. I chose Xoom, a free service. Since then, Xoom has merged with
NBCi. You can find them at http://home.nbci.com/ to get the
information you will need. Although there is no charge for their
service, they will place a banner ad at the top of each of your pages. I
do not mind this "intrusion" because I feel the banners give
my pages a more professional look. In addition, you can get a free
counter from NBCi. Not only will the counter tell you how many hits
(visits) you receive, but where they come from, what time they are
received and which hours and days get the most hits. I check these stats
every day. Other services are available and NBCi will host more than one
site for you. I recommend them highly.

SEARCH
ENGINES How will you attract
visitors now that you have a web site on the Internet? Search engines!
Search engines! Search engines! (and links). Contact search engines like
Yahoo, Lycos, Alta Vista, GoTo.com and Google to ask them to list your
site. Some search engines charge for their service, but most are free.
Also, you can look up related sites and ask them to add your URL (link)
to their site.
Submit your Web Site to PROMOTIONAL TOOLS This year I published Absecon Diary of Margie Roth, 1933-37 in
hard cover. Using my computer, I created a business card and a
letterhead for correspondence. Each of these features my web site URL:
www.absecondiary.com. When I use them, interested parties can visit my
site for more information about the book. I have issued
several press releases to area media regarding my book. I always include
my web site address in an effort to attract visitors to the site. Also,
several newspapers have done feature articles on my book. Each time,
they have included my web site address. Result: more visitors. Many
organizations have requested that I speak to their members about Absecon
Diary. I always list these appearances on my site. When I give my talk,
I call attention to my site and hand out literature containing the site
address. I’ve
appeared at several book signings at area bookstores. Again, when
discussing my book with people at the stores, I invite them to visit the
site. Advertising
should not be overlooked. I have placed ads in organization ad books and
in local newspapers. These ads always include the Absecon Diary web
site. My web site
includes a page instructing visitors how they can order a book. In
addition, I became an Associate of Amazon.com. Thus, a visitor can
easily move from the site to my page at Amazon.com if they would like to
order a book. I will set up the same capability with 1stBooks.com as
soon as my book is published on that site. CONCLUSION I
have noticed that many authors have created web sites for their books.
It seems they have done little to actively promote their sites to
attract visitors. I feel they should make a stronger effort toward
promotion. This effort will be translated into sales! Hopefully, I have
provided you with some useful hints on how to successfully use the
Internet to promote your book. Good luck!
